The Land of Yes

When I became a Nana, I wrote this little "poem" about Nana and Papa's house.

The Land of Yes

“Clean your room and do what I say.”

“No, I don’t have time today.”

“We have to go.”

“Now you must wait.”

“No, you may not stay up late.”

“Hurry now, we’ve got to go,

Mommy and Daddy will miss you so!”

Far away in the Land of Yes,

the smell of cookies, waffles, and love,

waft through the windows and drift out the door.

There’s rarely a scolding, scarcely a chore.

In the Land of Yes, no one says,

“No you may not.” or “Go to bed.”

“Not today,” or “I cannot play.”

There’s always enough time in the day.

The Land of Yes is filled with fun.

Games and stories and ice cream—yum!

A trip to the zoo or the park or the beach,

Our favorites for dinner and cookies—two each!

“May I have another?”

“Yes, you may.”

“Can we play dress-up?”

“Oh, how fun!”

“Let’s go fishing!”

“We’ll get donuts on the way.”

“Can we explore the woods?”

“I’ll pack some snacks.”

“Can we run through the sprinkler?”

“I’ll turn on the water.”

“Can I use glitter on my picture?”

“Um…okay!”

“Will you read one more story?”

“Which one would you like?”

“May I help you bake cookies?”

“I do need a helper.”

“Can we build a fort?”

“I’ll gather the cushions.”

“I miss my mommy.”

“I know you do.”

“I miss my daddy.”

“I do too.”

“I love you, Nana.”

“I love you too, sweetpea.”

“I love you, Papa.”

“I love you too, punkin.”

Wave goodbye to the Land of Yes,

Where time is plenty and fun is best.

Hug your mommy and daddy tight,

You’ll sleep in your own comfy bed tonight!
